12th and Final Course of Logs is up!

It was snowing as I was writing the last post and for the next few days it just kept snowing till we had 3-4 feet. This was more than anyone expected and is apparently the most at one time in Big Bear for 35 years. The average snowfall each year is about 5 feet. We were literally snowed in and stuck at home for 3 days. We had to have our friend with a bobcat come to the house we're renting and plow us out, because our driveway is really long and it was just too much to shovel. Over at the house site we had the parking pad at the bottom of the hill plowed out but didn't attempt to clear the driveway. We have some of the roofing lumber stacked up there anyway and wouldn't be able to park at the top. Roberto and a buddy came and shoveled for days clearing a path to walk up and uncovering the lumber. So, obviously this slowed the log stacking for some time. But, as soon as he could Jeff was back out there determined to get the last course stacked. Since that big storm the weather has been clear and work has continued albeit at a little slower pace since each log now has to be chipped out of the snow and ice before it can be stacked. With Roberto helping pound rebar, the final course was up after Sunday Jan. 4th. Finally!!! Jeff still needs to pin the corners of the walls, meaning he has to drill and pound rebar into the end of each log end to connect it to the other wall, not an easy task. And there is some more snow to be cleared out of the interior and an inspection with the city, but otherwise we are ready to move on to the roof. Jeff met with our friend Michael who is a contractor and would be doing the roof. They discussed the details and it sounded like they had a good game plan and could get started pretty soon. We'd always planned to hire the roof out to someone licensed. But we'd also be hiring more work out from now on because Jeff has been promoted to a new position that will require more of his time. So, things are moving along and we are very excited to be starting on the roof.

  1. Are you sure you won't consider a chairlift on your property? With all that snow, your driveway looks like a great black diamond ski run!
